The Toyota 1/X concept vehicle made its North American debut today at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. Developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, the Toyota 1/X compact hybrid offers a glimpse into the next era of automotive technological design. The Toyota 1/X redefines from its very roots the idea of what it means to be environmentally considerate. Pronounced 1/Xth, the name is derived from its vehicle mass, fuel consumption and emissions output, each totaling a fraction of that of other vehicles in its class.
The 1/X features an aerodynamic ultra-lightweight design that maintains the interior space of the Toyota Prius hybrid and is approximately one-third the weight of the Prius. Its low 926-pound curb weight is partially achieved through the use of a light but very strong carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) throughout the body frame.
The aerodynamic shape of the 1/X and unique cabin design result in smaller pillars, allowing passengers more visibility and helping to create a greater sense of openness and freedom with its outer surroundings for driver and passengers. The CFRP material is lighter and stronger than traditional metals, creating a shock-absorbing like structure with cross-sections that help absorb energy during an impact.
The 1/X roof is produced from a bio-plastic made from environmentally-responsible material derived from kenaf and ramie plants. The result is a roof that improves heat insulation, emits less carbon dioxide, increases the amount of light entering the cabin, and reducing noise.
On the inside, the 1/X employs four ultra-lightweight seats made of polyester fiber that is knitted three-dimensionally for added comfort. The material functions like a spring or damper that helps create a cushion-like feel for all occupants.
The ultra-lightweight stature of the 1/X also helps contribute to a fuel efficiency target that would double that of the Prius and allow the 1/X to operate with an ultra-small hybrid powertrain located under the rear seat. The system combines a home rechargeable plug-in hybrid unit with a small 500cc 0.5-liter flexible-fuel engine that is 1/4th of the total weight of the Prius powertrain. The hybrid plug-in concept is designed to accommodate a lithium-ion battery that would be rechargeable at home. The result is a vehicle with the possibility of traveling over 600 miles on a small four-gallon tank of fuel and achieving the acceleration performance that is equivalent to the Prius.
In consideration of pedestrians and oncoming traffic, the 1/X is equipped with non-glare headlights. The front of the 1/X is dominated by an LED lighting system that sweeps under and across its large front windshield. The LED system helps eliminate glare emanating from the headlights. At sunset, the entire surface of the LED system softly illuminates the entire front surface. With the headlights on, the LED system surrounds the headlights with a soft light, helping to prevent glare from striking oncoming cars and nearby pedestrians.
The light weight of the Toyota 1/X allowed designers to equip the vehicle with smaller and thinner wheels that help reduce splashing while driving in wet conditions. The tires are designed with central grooves that further help prevent water from splashing in the direction of pedestrians.
The 1/X concept is one more example of Toyota’s commitment to designing clean, safe and innovative vehicles. The Toyota 1/X concept made its world debut at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.
The all-new, third generation Toyota Avensis delivers more style, higher performance, improved fuel economy and lower emissions. Toyota’s flagship model in Europe, built exclusively at its Burnaston factory in the UK, benefits from athletic, contemporary styling, superb build quality and advanced engineering.
New engines and transmissions have been developed using Toyota Optimal Drive technology to return significantly better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to the previous generation model. New Valvematic petrol engines and revised D-4D and D-CAT clean diesel units balance driving pleasure with strong environmental performance and reduced running costs. Together they offer the private and company car driver all the power and comfort they are used to as well as the low emissions and fuel consumption they now demand.
New Avensis is available in saloon and tourer body styles with four equipment grades:
T2, TR, T4, and T Spirit. All offer a high level of features for safety, comfort and convenience, with advanced features such as a Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist/Lane Departure Warning (LKA/LDW) and premium satellite navigation system with built-in hard drive for storing music files available in the model for the first time.
UK sales of new Avensis start on 1 January with on-the-road prices from £15,760.
TOYOTA OPTIMAL DRIVE POWERTAINS
Toyota Optimal Drive is a new concept in powertrain engineering and design that is being applied to all new Toyota models. Toyota Optimal Drive means no compromise on performance, emissions or specification. On new Avensis, it brings new engine technologies and advanced transmissions, with low friction components, lightweight compact design and enhanced combustion efficiency.
New 1.8 and 2.0-litre Valvematic engines – more power for less fuel
Valvematic is an innovation based on Toyota’s proven dual Variable Valve timing – intelligent(dual VVT-i) technology. In addition to the variable timing of the inlet and outlet valves, Valvematic adds a lift control system that continuously varies the lift of the inlet valves to better control the volume and speed of the intake airflow. This provides a breakthrough in combustion efficiency that ultimately delivers more power for less fuel.
Across the range the new 1.8 and 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol engines achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of between 10 and 26 per cent, while at the same time increasing power by between three and 20 per cent, compared to the VVT-i engines used by the previous generation Avensis.
Revised D-4D and D-CAT diesel engines – up to 10% lower emissions
New Avensis offers customers one of the most comprehensive ranges of diesel engines in the D-segment, all of them benefiting from Toyota Optimal Drive technology. Entry point is the 2.0-litre D-4D 130, followed by the 2.2-litre D-4D and D-CAT 150 as mid-power options, and the 2.2 D-CAT 180 as the higher power unit (the D-CAT 150 engine with automatic transmission will join the range in spring 2009).
The challenge was to develop these engines to give excellent performance and low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, while at the same time achieving a substantial reduction in the level of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. Together the new diesel engine technology features deliver a reduction in CO2 and fuel consumption levels between one and 10 per cent compared to the previous generation Avensis; the 2.2-litre D-4D 150 and 2.2-litre 150/180 D-CAT engines all meet Euro V emissions standards.
Advanced new transmissions – diesel automatic for the first time
New Avensis uses a range of advanced transmissions that strike a balance between responsiveness, smoothness and fuel efficiency.
Multidrive S, Toyota’s new and advanced continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available with the 1.8 and 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol engines. And for the first time on a Toyota diesel passenger car, a six-speed automatic will be available, offered on the 2.2-litre D-CAT 150.
All petrol engines are fitted with a newly developed six-speed manual transmission, while the diesel engines are matched to the proven six-speed manual gearbox featured in the previous generation Avensis.
NEW PLATFORM WITH REVISED SUSPENSION
New Avensis has been engineered for smooth ride comfort, but with dynamic handling for rewarding driving characteristics.
A new platform provides an excellent balance of high-speed stability and low speed agility, and to enhance performance, both the MacPherson strut front suspension and the double wishbone rear suspension have been re-engineered with improvements in torsional stiffness and roll rigidity. Front shock absorber and rear lateral force steer specifications have also been upgraded.
New, large diameter wheels with wider tyres are fitted to further improve stability and dynamic handling. A flush underfloor design helps maintain stability at high speeds, reduces noise and contributes to fuel efficiency through improved aerodynamics.
New Avensis’s precise and flexible responsiveness is built on the strong foundations of a new, precision-welded platform of exceptional rigidity and a car body with excellent aerodynamics. This new platform is fundamental to the car’s handling and also contributes greatly to its safety and quiet running. High tensile steel accounts for much of the constituent steel body components, which helps reduce weight, increase rigidity and ensure superb collision safety performance.
HIGHEST SAFETY STANDARDS
Toyota has built on the exceptional safety standards of the second generation Avensis, using a robust new construction and providing an effective complement of active and passive safety systems.
Active safety for full control
New Avensis is equipped with latest-generation ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) as standard.
Steering Assist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+) is a new feature on Avensis, also fitted to all models. VSC+ operates with the Traction Control (TRC) to improve traction and safety in low grip conditions, going beyond the protection provided by conventional VSC systems by adding steering torque assist to help the driver counter the effects of under or oversteer in an emergency situation.
Optional Pre-Crash Safety system
T Spirit versions of the D-CAT 150 automatic will be available (from spring 2009) with the option of a Pre-Crash Safety system, a package that also includes Adaptive Cruise Control, which maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and Lane Keep Assist/Lane Departure Warning, which provides a warning and steering assistance when it detects that the car is drifting out of lane.
EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATIONS
Entry point to the new Avensis range is T2 grade. Key features include air conditioning, six-speaker audio system with CD and MP3 file player (from disc), heated electrically adjustable door mirrors, electric front windows, seven airbags, body coloured door handles and bumpers, electronic parking brake, a multi-information display and chrome window surround. The active safety provisions include ABS, EBD, Brake Assist (BA), and Steering Assist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+). Security is covered by a Thatcham Category 1 immobiliser and alarm plus remote central locking with double locking and lockable glove box. An anti-hijack system automatically locks all doors when vehicle speed goes above 12mph and all locks and latches are reinforced.
TR is the feature grade, accounting for a majority of new Avensis sales, and builds on the T2 specification with the addition of 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, automatic air conditioning, audio system with Bluetooth and Aux-in socket, cruise control with speed limiter (not 1.8 Valvematic with Multidrive S), automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, driver’s seat power lumbar support, leather steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth switches, leather gear knob trim, titanium centre console finish, electric rear windows and, on the tourer, boot rails.
Key elements of the T4 grade, above the TR specification, include special design 17-inch alloys, leather upholstery, auto-dimming rear view mirror, electric adjustable heated front seats and steering wheel with memory setting and Toyota’s Smart Entry and Start keyless system. The T4 tourer comes with rear privacy glass.
T Spirit is the pinnacle of the grade structure, adding 18-inch alloys in an exclusive design, rear parking sensors, a premium sound system with 11 speakers and CD changer, bi-xenon headlamps with the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) and headlamp washers. The T Spirit Tourer is fitted with a panoramic roof as standard.

The Ultimate NASCAR Fan Sienna Rampvan unveiled at the annual SEMA Show features the same extensive vehicle modifications found on other Sienna Rampvans providing outstanding wheelchair access, along with a host of new features ideal for the avid NASCAR fan.
Built by BraunAbility, the Sienna NASCAR Fan Rampvan is equipped with removable passenger seats with wheelchair tie-down points for up to three wheelchairs, a fully lowered floor, foldout ramp and an innovative “kneeling” rear suspension, all designed to provide unparalleled access for wheelchair and scooter users.
“The Ultimate NASCAR Fan Sienna Rampvan was developed to help increase awareness of this unique conversion, and to remind us that NASCAR fans and people in general come in all shapes, sizes and abilities,” said Bob Swaim, national manager for Mobility, Regulatory Compliance & People at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “We and BraunAbility intend to display the vehicle during the 2009 NASCAR season and then donate it to someone who can put it to good use.”
The floor of the van has been lowered by 11-inches, decreasing the ramp angle and allowing for deployment onto curbs, making it easier to enter and exit the vehicle and increasing interior headroom. The 30-inch-wide power ramp has three conveniently located control switches, emergency door-ramp release and anti-skid ramp coating. Full ramp extension requires only five seconds after the power sliding side door is fully open.
The Ultimate NASCAR Fan Sienna Rampvan features the same distinctive red and black paint scheme and racing-style decals as the No. 38 Toyota Camry campaigned in the NASCAR Nationwide Series by Braun Racing. Driven by Jason Leffler of Long Beach, Calif., the team gave the Camry its historic first NASCAR victory by winning the Nationwide Series race in July 2007 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis.
Helping to provide the NASCAR “look” is a custom grill, air dam and simulated hood pins. Roofline air deflectors - mandatory on Nationwide race cars, replace the roof rack and there’s even a custom cut window net, another must for the track. The exterior is capped off by a Toyota Accessory rear spoiler and TRD Exhaust Tip.
The interior is highlighted by custom Katzkin seating in black and white leather with red suede upholstery, with matching door inserts and a custom Permobil wheelchair. Carbon Fiber by Superior Dash is used for the instrument panel, door trim and steering wheel. A DVD entertainment system is included with JBL audio and subwoofer and Sirius XM Satellite Radio, for the latest in NASCAR information.
The Sienna also has been fitted with TRD 19 inch wheels, paired with Yokohama ADVAN S.4 245/45R19 98Y performance tires. TRD custom brakes feature larger front rotors with 4-piston calipers and cross-drilled rear rotors with 2-piston calipers. Braided stainless steel brake lines are used throughout. Other hardware racing touches include a TRD oil filler cap and custom painted engine cover.
Any NASCAR fan knows the ultimate experience is not complete without everything needed for a tailgate and the Sienna Rampvan comes loaded with Colemen equipment including a Roadtrip Grill, cooler, cordless blender and canvas chairs.
Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. and Fender Musical Instruments Corporation have partnered to create the Matrix 6-String concept car with design elements created and inspired by the world-renowned Fender Custom Shop. With Matrix’s appeal to independent males who are a little rebellious in nature and like to experience things first hand and Fender’s rich rock-n-roll history and credibility with the youth market, this relationship was a natural pairing.
The Matrix 6-String’s Austin Speed Shop-designed interior keeps in the classic style of Fender® while incorporating the modern lines and feel of the Matrix. Pearlessence Silver and Chatham Black leather by Garrett Leather adorns the front seats and doors panels. Austin Speed Shop’s own Fat Lucky’s Upholstery is highlighted by custom red stitching, mimicking the 1960’s Von Dutch style pinstripe, embellishing the front seats in a theme that is carried throughout the vehicle. Reproduction 1960’s black and silver carpet by Auto Custom Carpets further carries the classic theme to the floor of the concept while black suede covers the headliner, sun visors, and pillars. Color matched accents in vintage red pearl drum wrap add visual interest and enhance the musical ties within the interior.
The rear of the concept houses an extraordinary Panasonic audio/visual system that includes a 42 inch wide plasma screen HDTV, four amplifiers producing 875 watts, and a Fender® G-DEC® guitar amplifier. For extra flare, custom illuminated billet speaker rings with Fender grill cloth have been incorporated into the vehicle covering each of the 17 speakers. Additionally, an integrated Sony Playstation 3 allows enthusiasts to play the popular Rock BandTM music game from the back of the vehicle. Even the Rock Band guitar conveys the vintage theme with the same red pearl drum wrap treatment displayed throughout the vehicle.
The exterior of the vehicle boasts an aggressive body kit painted in House of Kolors Kandy Brandy Wine. A custom set of three-piece Klassen 22-inch wheels wrapped with Toyo Proxy performance tires, front mount intercooler and a one off stainless steel exhaust compliment the new look.
Accompanying the exterior modifications are JBT big brakes and calipers, braided stainless steel brake lines and a height adjustable coil over the suspension. Classic pinstriping paint by Dart Graphics ties the exterior to the interior of the concept.
The pièce de résistance, a custom Fender Stratocaster® guitar built at the Fender Custom Shop will be played by Custom Shop Marketing Director Mike Eldred and amplified from the back of the Matrix 6-String during the show. The Fender Custom Shop® is where Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, John Mayer, Jeff Beck and many others go to get their instruments made. This special guitar will be displayed in a custom display case next to the Matrix 6-String during the SEMA event.
For two decades now, the Fender Custom Shop has astounded players and collectors worldwide with achievements of creativity, ingenuity and guitar artistry. From humble mid-’80s beginnings in Fender’s original Southern California home, the Custom Shop has grown to become the world’s preeminent maker of custom “instantly collectible” instruments; a veritable dream factory that has made Fender’s finest the world’s finest.

The 2009 Tundra TR Concept is directed to the drag racing segment of automobile enthusiasts.
Back in the 60’s and early 70’s, auto manufacturers responded to the growing desire for high performance automobiles by creating a segment now known as muscle cars. The ideal concept was to pair the lightest platform with the largest motor, thus giving the buyer the best horsepower to weight ratio possible. While many of the packages loudly advertised the car’s performance (SuperBee, Boss 302, GTO, Challenger, etc.) some of the most potent combinations had little to no options and no exterior differentiation from the base model cars to create a “sleeper.” These cars are best described by a quote from Teddy Roosevelt: “Speak softly, but carry a Big Stick.”
The Thunder Pak concept starts with the lightest possible Tundra in the Tundra Grade Regular Cab, paired with the awesome power of the 5.7L iForce V8. The Thunder Pak system is intended to provide customers performance packages at a discount to upgrade the performance of their Tundra. This unassuming truck has been equipped with a compliment of TRD equipment including a supercharger which boosts the performance to 500HP/550TQ. Performance has been further enhanced with a Nitrous Oxide Systems dual tank nitrous oxide system resulting in a dyno-proved 625HP. All aspects of the motor are monitored through a selection of Autometer Gauges.
